Middle Eastern Cultural Festival

We want to let Missourians know about the Middle East, culture, food, everything. The other thing is I’m a big fan of the refugees. I myself came from the Iraq War in 1991, and there wasn’t much help even though I was just seven years old. So I want to be available to those people if I can. This is home for them now, so we have to help them in any way we can. -Emma Jaber

The organization’s Supper Club is just one way in which it’s helping local refugees. Tea lights cast a soft glow at Meshuggah Café, creating a far different atmosphere than during the day, when bright rays stream through the windows of the popular Delmar Loop café. Tables have been pushed together to form one long communal table top, with flowers in small vases lending an elegant touch.

Asked to give a review of her meal, Lori Korn gushed in her praise. The baba ghanoush — a dish of mashed, cooked eggplant — “excellent, very smoky and delicious.” The tabouli — parsley, tomato and other ingredients in a cabbage cup — “very, very fresh.” And the yebra — meat and rice wrapped in grape leaves — “tender and tasty,” said the woman from Boston visiting family in St. Louis.

The room at the Boo Cat Club is packed, and Jessica Bueler is flitting around, managing the event, making sure the crowd of mostly white St. Louis women is enjoying the food. A young Syrian boy stops her and quietly asks where he’s allowed to sit.

Welcome Neighbor STL provides an array of help to Syrians. When Lina Almuallem fled war-torn Syria in 2012 with her husband and three children she knew no English, had no friends and didn’t know how to drive. Now she speaks English well, learned to drive and has a job sewing for a costume company.

On November 1, 2016, four Syrian refugees were beaten outside of their home in the north side of St. Louis. The boys, who ranged from 13-15 years of age, were punched and kicked by a group of unknown suspects.
